Sonu Nigam Performs At Ponds Femina Miss India 2013

Sonu Nigam - Music Is A State Of Mind!

After his performance at Gandhi Maidan on Friday, popular playback singer SonuNigam shared his bittersweet experience of life and music with Parul Pandey. Excerpts:

Q: How was the experience in Bihar? Do you think it has changed?
A: Frankly speaking, I should not have performed since I am in a trance after my mother's death, recently. This was more like meeting my commitment rather than enjoyment. For the first time, I understood the meaning of word 'the show must go on...' Overall, Bihari audience is very sincere. They understand and appreciate good music.
Q: What you have to say on the changing trend of music?
A: Any form of art is just the impression of society. Whatever music we are hearing today would have been called a stupidity and madness in 40s and 80s. The present generation cannot connect to five decades old music and the vice versa.
Q: What is music and singing to you?
A: Music is a state of mind.
Q: Do you think it is fair that untrained singers win singing competition through SMSs?
A: Is everything fair in life!
Q: Are you religious or spiritual?
A: I am neither religious nor spiritual. I'm a seeker, somebody who is trying to understand the true essence of life.
Q: You have not resumed acting after 'love in Nepal'?
A: Love in Nepal was a very good movie and I am proud of it. But I have realized my time is too precious to waste on those who are not sincere enough like me. I can only work with people who are as crazy as I am and whose intentions are right. If I get such projects that touch me I will definitely do it.
Q: Any new album?
A: Yes, very soon my new English album 'INDIA' is coming. It would be launched worldwide.
Q: Why new albums are not coming these days?
A: Due to digitization of music, albums don't earn good money. It is a non-profitable business now.
Q: Share your bond with your mother.
A: My whole family was very much attached to her. We still cry over losing her. For the first time on Thursday I received an award when my mother was not there. Usually, I used to keep any award at her feet but this time I kept it near her photo and cried hard.
Q: Your wife's role in your life?
A: She is the mother of my child. First, she was my girlfriend then became my wife. We all have tough times but nothing is foolproof. That's life!
Q: How your life changed after the birth of your son?
A: Life is still changing. He is a happy child and I am not a typical tough father. I respect my son and don't look down upon him.
Q: Does he like singing? Do you want him to be a singer?
A: He likes singing, dancing, acting and even tries directing at home. He is a topper and plays tennis and learn judo. It is not the time to decide anything for him.

Sonu Nigam Sang With Team India

NEW DELHI: In the Indian Test team, every cricketer is deeply attached to music. When it comes to live Bollywood numbers from one of the best artists in the industry Sonu Nigam, the players can't be left behind in their hotel rooms. Sonu arrived on the stage none of these cricketers were visible barring skipper MS Dhoni, who left after a few moments.

But the moment the concert began and the audience started tapping to the tune, the rest of the cricket team contingent walked in - Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina, Ravindra Jadeja, Ashok Dinda, R Ashwin, Ajinkya Rahane and Pragyan Ojha.
Not to leave out Yuvraj Singh, who was playing the co-host as the Sahara Pune Warrior owner Subrata Roy's was throwing a big bash for his granddaughter's "annaprashan ceremony".
You may have seen cricketer posing for photographs and giving visuals to telephone cameras of the fans, but in this gathering, the cricketers were capturing Sonu Nigam's live performance on their phones.
Some of them like Raina and Kohli got so involved and they sang with Sonu. With Suresh Raina's penchant for music - he shared the famour Aradhana song "Mere Sapno Ki Rani Kab Aayegi Tu". However, Virat Kohli emerged the best of the lot when he sang "Bachna Ae Haseeno Lo Me aa gaya."
Even Sonu Nigam was impressed. By the time it was late evening, the cricketers were still hanging in there and kept humming songs.
Soon, Sonu Nigam dedicated the songs from 1997 hit movie Border - Sandesha Aate hai, Ke Ghar Ab Aaoge - resembling how the cricketers miss home when they are traveling for cricket assignments.
Before they parted for the night, Yuvraj went up to the stage and hugged Sonu Nigam and consoled his mother's death who passed away recently. Indeed a night to remember!

Sonu Nigam Steal's The Show In Patna

Sonu Nigam crooned patriotic tunes of 'Mera rang de basantichola', romantic numbers 'Surajhuamadham', 'Shukran Allah', and other evergreen numbers at the inaugural cultural function of BiharDiwas celebrations at Gandhi Maidan on Friday evening.

The singer, who has many Indi-pop albums to his credit, rocked the audience, with his troupe from Mumbai, with many popular tracks including 'Aaja aaja mai hu pyar tera', 'Dhunki', 'Tumhi ho bandhu', 'Aivyehi aivyehi', 'Gumsum', 'Tu aaja soniye', 'Bachna ae hasino', 'Mere sapno ki rani', as fans stood on chairs to catch a glimpse of their favourite singer and waved and cheered as he interacted with them.

Laser light formed patterns on a transparent screen on stage and an audio-visual clip, "Gauravshali Bihar - Ek atulya pradesh" that depicted the history of formation of Bihar since the ancient times, completed the laser show package. The visuals were supplemented with scripted commentary and background scores. Audio-visual clips of popular movies and television shows were also integrated with the script to beautifully bring out the state's historic glory.

The laser show started the journey of Bihar as the first republic of world civilization via historic names of Gautam Buddha, Mahavir, Guru Gobind Singh, Chanakya and Chadragupta, Tilka Manjhi, Babu Kunwar Singh and concluded with present government schemes for the development of the state.

Colourful light beams from designer projections made beautiful formation of waves or designs that converged upwards or criss-crossed to form visually delightful outline. Pleasing music of "Bihar gaurav gaan" and "Vande matram" added to the show, ending it on a patriotic note.

A dance act by students of Bharatiya Nritya Kala Mandir on the tunes of Bihar prayer song 'Mere raftar pe suraj ki kiran naaz karein' and Bihar rajya geet 'Mere Bharat ke kanthhaar', enthralled the gathering and gave a perfect start to the cultural programmes. Their coordination on the rhythmic beats was simply stunning. Another performance on "Bihar gaurav gaan" organized by the art, culture and youth affairs department also struck a chord with the audience.

Sonu Nigam - My Mother Was My Best Ally!

Editor's note: Sonu Nigam's mother breathed her last in his arms on Feb 28th. This interview was conducted a few weeks before that, when his mother was seriously ailing. For Sonu, there was no bigger priority than looking after her and ever since she was seriously ill, he was always on tenterhooks accepting shows due to his insecurity of losing her in his absence.

Sonu Nigam, 39, is a combination of his talent and his father's manifestation of his desire for his son to achieve what he was unable to. He sees the deep spiritual reflection of God in his parents whom he surrenders to. Over an hour-long conversation he talks to TOI about his mother, his struggling years and why he will always miss Gulshan Kumar. Excerpts:

Let's talk about your mother.
For the last few months since she was unwell, I would just hold her hand and start crying. When I was a child, we lived on the second floor and I would get down my school bus and not go up till my mother came down and took me on her back and climbed up. She was a professional singer, but would also do all the household work and look after me. She is my queen. Recently, I made her sing with me on stage in one of the concerts in LA and I made her listen to that recording. Starting from the second half of last year, it has been a difficult period for me be it my mother's health or complications in my personal life. I had no other escape other than my work. Before every show I would call my mother and say 'Mummy I don't know how I will sing today'. But that would change as soon as I went on stage and would merge with my music. She is my best ally and I don't want to lose her. Nobody other than her would be concerned if I had eaten or had oiled my hair. She is my queen.

Let's talk about your journey from Delhi to Mumbai.
I was born in Faridabad but brought up in Delhi and Mumbai. My father had been living hand-to-mouth and literally slept on railway platforms when he came to Mumbai for the first time to become a film singer. My parents were both singers, they sang together and fell in love due to their singing. They eloped to get married. By the age of four, I was singing with them. He could not do what I have done to become a singer be it running behind people, waiting for hours, touching even the feet of peons and people who did not deserve to be in the positions they were in. I was a topper till class tenth and wanted to initially be a scientist. But after tenth once my real voice opened up, it started sounding good. When I was 15, we were paid Rs 50 per show and later started getting Rs 175 per shaadi or jagran. I started saving money for coming to Mumbai later and came finally with my father after my 12th at the age of 18. I had learnt music from listening to CDs and cassettes but acquired theoretical knowledge for four months in Delhi of ragas and taal just enough to not be troubled by people in Mumbai when we came here.

Tell us about your early years in Mumbai.
My dad has a lot of foresight and decided that I would not do any shows in Mumbai till I became a singer and got to sing my own songs. He knew that if I started earning money from shows, I would not have the time and aggression to rough it out to become a singer. We initially lived with my uncle after which we sold our place in Delhi and bought a one room apartment in Andheri. At that time, only my dad and I had come to Mumbai. I used to cook, sweep the floor and spend a lot of time in the kitchen as I used to practice at night. There were girls who used to roam around below our house. There was a shop below called AJ's which was run by Ajay. When I would come down, he would tell me that there was a girl passing by who thought of me as the good looking servant in the house and he would tell her that I was actually the owner. My dad had told me one thing that stayed with me always. He said 'either you struggle now and live a comfortable life later or you can enjoy now and struggle later'. We never had even a landline so I would visit a PCO and keep calling offices of music companies and music directors asking for time to meet them.

How did you get your first break?
We got down from the train and went straight to Bandra to stay in the cockroach-infested Mansarovar Hotel where Dharmendra had stayed when he had come to Mumbai as my dad was knowledgable about the film industry and knew this. We left our luggage and went straight to Sachin's Pilgaonkar place. He had heard me as a child in Delhi while judging a competition and had told my father to bring me to him when I grew up. He met us very nicely. Then we went to Anu Malik who had also seen me at a competition in Delhi and I reminded him of being the boy with the fracture. He remembered me and even though he did not have work at that time, he met me nicely. The next person we went to was Usha Khanna as she was known to give breaks to new people. I waited for her seven hours after which I sang in front of her and she loved my voice. She gave me my first song. My dad and I would roam around in Mumbai in buses and later in my two-wheeler. Then once in 1992, I sung a dummy song which was to be actually sung by SP Balasubramiam. But the shooting had happened on my voice which Gulshan Kumar heard. He was sharp and called for me. I got the call of my life from Ajit Kohli which said 'Gulshan Kumarji wants to meet you'. He saw me singing and said 'Oye Kohli to kehra tha aap aap chote ho, but aap to bahut chote ho'. But I will support you and made me sing the original song. Gulshan Kumarji was one true connoiseaur of music and changed the face of music and I miss him. He trusted his composers so much that he would put their pictures even on posters and loved his singers and musicians. He would gift his singers. Gulshanji had told me sing as many songs as you want outside, but sing cover versions only for us. He did not tie me up with any contract but I did not go to Tips even though I was asked by Ramesh Tauraniji from Tips to sing for him. I told him 'if I cheat Gulshanji today, I will cheat you tomorrow'. I participated in celeb Antakshari and then hosted Sa Re Ga Ma after which I sung my first hit song from Border.

Does it bother you that music directors are today singing their own songs?
A lot of singers grudge it. I feel there is nothing wrong with them singing but they should not be governed by the greed to sing. A song needs to be sung by a singer whose voice quality is suited for the song. A song becomes a legacy only when you have the right composition, lyrics and singer. You can deliver a hit song but to make it legacy, you need to have the correct voice. I directed music for two films but have not sung for them. I felt Mika's and Ash King's voice were better suited for some of the songs and got them to sing it.

What's your take on marriage?
I am not in favour of marriages. The happiest looking people would be happier if they were not married. Marriages kill love affairs as you start taking your partner for granted and familiarity breeds contempt. Marriage should have an expiry date with a renewal option.

Sonu Nigam Composes For Singh Saab The Great!

Sonu Nigam has donned the music director's hat Anil Sharma's Singh Saab The Great.

Nigam who is known for his melodious voice, has composed the title song sung by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan along with the lyrics penned by Kumar.
Sources close to the unit says, "It was Anil Sharma's idea that Sonu compose a song once ready it was liked by Sunny Deol too. Both, Anil and Sonu, have known each other for a long time. Anil always knew that Sonu would be talented as a music director and wanted him to compose the title track. Sonu of course was happy that Anil gave him a chance to show his skills."
The source also adds "Sonu felt that Rahat's voice would suit Sunny Deol the best. It has the heavy baritone yet it is melodious and that goes down very well with Sunny's personality. The title track is the highlight of the film and Anil plans to draw Sunny in his best form."
