Sonu Niigaam & Vidu Vinod Chopra Phir Se Dost!

Be it friendship or animosity, nothing is permanent in Bollywood.

Last week Sonu Nigam was seen recording a song at Purple Haze Studio Maare Re Maare for Pritam for Ferrari Ki Sawari. The film stars Sharman Joshi in the main lead and is said to release on Nov 11.

Interestingly, Sonu and Vinod had had a huge fallout last year when copyright issues developed between music directors and producers.

Though Sonu and Vinod were very close once and had also worked on films like Parineeta, Munnabai MBBS and 3 Idiots, a rift had grown between them.

Sonu recorded the song with Pritam. Later, when Vinod heard the song he paid Sonu a compliment. That was all that was needed. Sonu met Vinod and hugged him, thus putting an end to a year-old fight.

Sonu Niigaam Completes 20 Years In The Industry At Idea 56th Filmfare Awards

Sonu Niigaam took the audience to a different level when he started his live act by crooning the heart warming theme song from Titanic – My heart will go on. It was undoubtedly an awesome start. The magic in his voice like always, didn't fail to impress and like the original song visual, the stage lit up with aqua marine lights. The singer had a special reason to perform live as it's a special day for him as he completes 20 years in the industry. While performing, he came down the stage to touch Yash Chopra's feet as the veteran director is the one who gave Sonu a break.

It's also a special year for Yash Chopra as he completes 51 years in the industry. He said, "I think only movies. I have no other ambition." Sonu Niigam also sang the song Ae Meri Johra Jabeen in honour of Yash Chopra.

Sonu then went and greeted Farah Khan with a warm hug. He fondly recalls the time in Dubai where Farah paid his taxi fare. Dedicated to Farah, Sonu croons 'Kiska Hai Yeh Tumko Intezar Main Hoon Na' and Farah joins in too. Both then went up to Anu Malik and the 3 of them jam up and complete the song. Then they all go up to David Dhawan and sing 'Jeene Ke Hai Char Din'.

Sonu now goes up to Rekha and Compliments her. She shares her beauty tips. Sonu asked her how do you feel that everyone loves you and she promptly replied, "But those ones you want to be loved by do not love you." Her reply stunned the audience. And everybody knew whom she was hinting towards. Rekha and Sonu then break into the song 'Dil Cheez Kya Hai'. Once again, Rekha stuns the audience by singing so well.

After Rekha, it's SRK's turn. He says, "I owe a lot to singers. Thanks Sonu." Both sing the song Kal Ho Na Ho and SRK also does his trademark steps.

Sonu then heads towards Shatrughan Sinha who goes down memory lane and gives some tips to young stars, "Prove yourself better than the best or prove yourself different than the rest - Shotgun's mantra to youngsters. They both sing Aaj Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai.

Sonu Niigaam Hosted The Mirchi Music Awards - The Results!

MUMBAI: In an era when film music relies upon the formula of a continuous refrain and Sufi notes to attract listeners, a few songs towered above the rest at India's leading music awards ceremony last night. The Uninor Mirchi Music Awards 2010 powered by Karbonn Mobiles were presented at the MMRDA Complex in Bandra on Thursday.

Salman Khan's Dabangg flexed its muscle in the music industry as well, winning awards for song of the year (Munni Badnam Hui), best music director (Sajid Wajid ), best male (Rahat Fateh Ali Khan for Tere Mast Mast) and female (Mamta Sharma for Munni Badnam) vocalists, best item song (Munni), background score (Sandeep Shirodkar) and album of the year. The eternally young Gulzar was voted the best lyricist for Dil Toh Bachcha Hai Ji.

Mustafa Kutaone won best upcoming vocalist for Beera, while Mamta Sharma won in the same category for Munni. Shiraz Uppal was named best upcoming music director for Aashayein and the Bhadwai Village Mandali were declared upcoming lyricists of the year for Mehngai from Peepli Live.

Salman Khan Afridi and Farhad K Dadybujor won the best song engineer of the year for Dil Toh Bachcha Hai Ji while Shankar Ehsaan Loy were awarded the best programmer and arranger of the year for Noor-e-Khuda. Uninor Mirchi listeners' choice of song of the year was Sheila Ki Jawani and the Uninor Mirchi listeners' choice album of the year was Once Upon A Time In Mumbai. Thumri from Kohram was judged the the best Indipop song. Kare kare badra fro Mirch won best raga-based song, while Sajda (My Name Is Khan) was the best Sufi song.

Charanjeet Singh Channi, an instrumentalist who has worked on films like An Evening In Paris, was rewarded for his outstanding contribution to music. Bombay Ravi, the music director who gave us songs like Chaudhavi Ka Chand and those from Waqt, Humraaz and Nikaah, was given the lifetime achievement award.

Rishi Kapoor accepted the award for best album of the golden era for Barsaat. "It's the first time I'm accepting a baap ka award," joked Kapoor.

In keeping with the stature of the awards ceremony, A-list artistes like Shaan and Sonu Nigam took the stage — a first for this duo. Shaan and Sonu were also the hosts for the evening that began with a bang. Bappi Lahiri danced to I Am A Disco Dancer, while Usha Uthup grooved to Rambha Ho and the crowd conveniently forgot all about Munni or Sheila. Priyanka Chopra and Akshay Kumar took the stage to promote their upcoming films. In an interesting gimmick, Chopra arrived with seven bridegrooms.

Daler Mehndi and his brother Mika were a rage as were Vishal-Shekhar. Shreya Ghoshal drew hearty applause for her Shukran Allah act. Kailash Kher brought to life his time-tested hit, Teri Deewani. Newcomers Neha Bhasin, Master Saleem, Anushka Manchanda, Neeraj Shridhar, Mamta Sharma and Aishwarya lifted the tempo with a medley of songs including Kuchh khas hai, Aahun aahun, Let's rock, and of course, Munni.

Sonu Niigaam Would Have Been A Great Actor if Not A Singer, & he Is Both. He Captivates People Very Well - Ramesh Sippy

Ramesh Sippy, Shankar Mahadevan, Annu Malik, Lalit Pandit and Kailash Kher, some of the members of the eminent Jury of Uninor Mirchi Music Awards 2010 Powered by Karbonn Mobiles tell Poonam Ahuja why they are on the Jury, and why they expect the star anchors Sonu Nigam and Shaan to rock the live event tonight!

What is your opinion of the Uninor Mirchi Music Awards 2010 powered by Karbonn Mobiles as the biggest and best awards event created purely for the music industry?

Annu Malik: Mirchi Music Awards is hugely genuine and it’s been decided by a wonderful jury which consists of eminent singers and composers from the music fraternity including Javedji, Lalitji, Kailash Kher, Shankar Mahadevan, Ramesh Sippyji and many other eminent personalities. It is nice to have a tremendous mix of music. It’s about being in the music field and choosing by discussion the songs and people who have given their best to the industry. It is not only about glamour. For this, I want to say, ‘Wow, Radio Mirchi!’

Lalit Pandit: Radio Mirchi is the first that has come up with this idea of having awards only for music and people connected with the technical aspects of recording, writing, engineering of a song and honouring the musicians, composers, writers and other technicians. I think the idea has really caught on and Radio Mirchi has really grown it over the last three years that I have been with these awards. As an artist and a part of the Radio Mirchi jury I am really proud at how hard everyone has worked -- the jury members, the staff and people from Radio Mirchi. It’s a wonderful feeling to have an award dedicated to music and also this makes it very special because all the jury members are people who know music and practice music. Prominent writers and super composers are part of jury who decide the best of the work that has taken place over the year. I think this makes it really very special.

Kailash Kher: Every award has its own recognition and reputation. In Mirchi Music Awards people’s work is praised and appreciated and their work is accepted by the entire world. Along with the award the respect and recognition which it gains is of prime value and importance.

Shankar Mahadevan: It is the first of its kind and it is great that such a popular radio network has got its award ceremony because I think it’s wonderful to have an award dedicated only to music.

Ramesh Sippy: Radio Mirchi was the first to start this, and it and was long overdue. It is a very fine initiative. This is India, and Bollywood is known for its music, which is integrated into the films. Although we have music awards as a part of film industry awards from the very beginning, we don’t have purely music awards unlike the West, where such awards have been popular for a very long time, so it was about time that India woke up to these awards.

The Indian musicians, composers, singers, lyrists and all the people behind music must have their right and recognition in the world of Indian Music. Our film music is by far the most popular music compared to the rest of the word’s music.

Why did you choose to join the Jury of these awards?

Annu Malik: It is a great feeling to be a part of the Jury. They have selected me as I have been in the industry for 30 years now. I also have had a sudden hit with Yaamla Paagla Deewana.

Lalit Pandit: I feel I have given many years of my life to music and composes music for some wonderful films, and it feels really great to go through the songs of composers and writers and feel which one has done good work and has been nominated from my side. I am also sure people who receive this award feel pride in taking this award as it comes from the music fraternity itself, so it’s appreciation from people who understand music and you work along with them. This makes it very special and precious. Even to get nominated for Radio Mirchi’s Mirchi Music Awards is an honour.

Kailash Kher: I liked the concept of these awards. As it is, Music awards are very few, and I thought I should get associated with Radio Mirchi’s awards.

Shankar Mahadevan : I am a part of the jury for three consecutive years, right from the beginning, because it was a first-of-its-kind and a unique venture. I think people who are musically established are a part of this jury, so the awards will be very fair.

Ramesh Sippy: The truth is that they invited me. At first I did think, ‘How do I relate to these awards? I am a movie maker, a director, so what would be my role?’ But besides musicians they wanted a movie maker for the perspective on how movie making and music go together, from people who understand music. They said, ‘We want your knowledge, experience of integrating music with films as part of the tradition of making films in India’. It is to celebrate the musicians and everyone related to the world of music, and I am happy to be with it.

How does it feel to be judging others’ work when you yourself are a practicing professional in the space of composing or singing or writing or producing or directing films with music?

Annu Malik: It is a great feeling to be a part of the jury. The Mirchi Music Awards is all about fair judgment. It’s not only me but also all the other members of the jury who make a very fair and wise judgment.

Lalit Pandit: It feels really nice because you come across some wonderful work which you have missed. There is some music which doesn’t become very popular and you miss it, but when you hear it you feel, ‘no, he or she has done a good job!’ I feel very proud and happy to judge others’ work and I have always been very appreciative of people’s work. I enjoy listening to music or a song composed by someone else which is appealing to me as I am an appreciative person. I have a different point of view of judging a musical score and I feel I am perfect for the job because I am unbiased and I appreciate music, and that’s the key.

Shankar Mahadevan: It is a quite a responsible position but I think my friends who are a part of the jury are wonderful and so it’s a pleasure to be with them.

Ramesh Sippy: I am very happy to be part of the jury which includes lyricists, composers, singers and others. Taking their guidance to come forth with a conclusion is wonderful. As an individual I have had a lot of experience of judging films including for the National Awards, so I think that I am very well suited to do the job well.

Sonu Nigam and Shaan will anchor the awards, and even perform tonight. What is your opinion of the two as singers and anchor-performers?

Annu Malik: It is going to be full of fun. We’ll see the best of Sonu. He will pull the crowd with his great mimicry and singing. Shaan is also one of the best hosts and has hosted musical shows wonderfully. So I’m really looking forward to it.

Lalit Pandit: It’s a wonderful idea to have singers or people from the music industry to host the show, and Shaan and Sonu are both very experienced in hosting shows because both have done hosting in ‘Sa Re AG AM PA’ and ‘Voice Of India’. They are professional, and every energetic. They are also excellent live performers, so I think Radio Mirchi Music Awards are going to be rocking this year!

Kailash Kher: Both are good friends and are amongst the leading singers of the nation. In today’s competing world where people are back-biting and insecure, it is wonderful to have see good human beings doing good work together. When more and more people are getting into the music industry, both Shaan and Sonu have acted as pillars for the fraternity. Both of them along with us also took the initiative to form the Singer Association of India (SAI). All this is possible only when there is intelligence and less of personal complexes and competition amongst one another. Both are also a great source of inspiration for the future generation.

Shankar Mahadevan: It will be great fun because both are lovely people, excellent singers and great actors and mimics too.

Ramesh Sippy: Sonu is a great performer and actor and he holds people very well when he’s on stage. Sonu would have been a great actor if not a singer, and he is both. He captivates people very well. Shaan is another young man who has come up wonderfully over last few years and the 27th night is going to be rocking!

Sonu Niigaam's Home - Help Solve A Bank Robbery

Playback singer Sonu Niigaam may not even be aware that his bungalow in Versova played a crucial role in helping the Crime Branch solve the sensational Bank of India diamond robbery case, which came to light last week.

A few crime branch sleuths posed as prospective buyers to lure one of the the key accused, Shamshuddin Azmi, into their trap and get his signature to see if it matched the one on the bank's register.

Azmi told the undercover cops that he could arrange for the sale and, when they expressed interest, Azmi thought that he had trapped rich clients he could dupe.

He quoted a price of Rs 15 crore but the officials aware of the fact that Niigaam had already sold the property to one Chaudhary recently requested Azmi to bring the price down to Rs 13 crore.

The officials met Azmi several times during the property deal and, as per the plan, collected all necessary details about the accused.

The sleuths took photographs of him and even convinced him to sign on a blank paper. Once Azmi's signature matched the one scribbled on the bank's register, he was taken into custody.

"Azmi is a small-time estate agent. He was aware that Sonu Niigaam's bungalow was on sale and pretended to be its broker.

Our team posed as prospective buyers and solved the case," said Nishikant Patil, senior inspector, crime branch unit-II.

Niigaam could not be reached for comment.

Hollow claim
During the course of the investigation when the sleuths called a technician of the bank's locker-making company to ask how the duplicate keys could have been made, he said it was impossible to do so.

The technician's claim, however, was proved hollow by key maker Farid Hashmi, another accused in the Rs 4.4 crore heist, who made duplicate keys to the lockers based on descriptions given to him over the phone.

Speaking about the way in which the crime branch team arrested the accused, a visibly-impressed Himanshu Roy, joint commissioner (crime), said, "The method was very unique.

I have never come across such a modus operandi in my career."

The operation
According to the police, the main accused, Ajay Mehta (48), a resident of Goregaon, had ventured into diamond trading in the '90s, but his business did not click.

Frustrated, he planned a bank heist. The trader booked a locker at the Opera House branch of the bank and Mehta and his men spent time in the vault and gave Hashmi, the key maker, descriptions of other lockers.

Hashmi took around two months to prepare keys to each lockers while a duplicate to the master key was made in three months. The gang has confessed to opening 14 lockers and cleaning out diamonds over a period of 30 months.

Interestingly, only one locker owner, Mehul Doshi, registered a complaint with the police. Officials say the other victims may have kept mum fearing investigation from the income tax department.

Mehta, Azmi, Hashmi and Chandrasen Anand Barde (49) were arrested in connection with the heist on January 18.

Sonu Niigaam & Mumbai Celebrates The Arts!

In the general absence of parks and open spaces, the street is the nucleus of communal life in Mumbai. It’s where meals are sold and eaten, where groceries are purchased on the commute home and where neighbors gather every evening for a chat. But until recent years, art and culture remained off the city’s streets, strictly confined to galleries and theaters frequented by the elite. The debut of the Kala Ghoda Arts Festival (KGAF) in 1999 changed that. This year’s version will take place Feb. 5 to 13, spread over several streets in Mumbai’s tiny but beautiful colonial-era art district.

The KGAF is the city’s most important annual cultural event; it’s also perhaps the only urban Indian arts festival that is accessed by — and is accessible to — the rich and poor alike. “The focus for us has always been taking art to the public,” said Brinda Miller, the event curator. “Almost all our workshops and events are free.”

The festival will feature 350 events, and organizers expect as many as 30,000 visitors. The program spans the entire cultural gamut, encompassing fine art, sculpture, dance, music, cinema, literature and theater.

This year, after a local resident complained about the noise generated by the event, the festival will be forced to be “soundless” — installations will focus instead on light, and some music and dance events will take place without microphones. Highlights include guided walks through the city’s biggest open-air laundromat and the enormous gothic-style Chhatrapati Shivaji train station, performances
by Sonu Niogaam & tabla master Ustad Fazal Qureshi and Bollywood singer , a textile installation by the popular designer Krsna Mehta, and screenings of alternative and mainstream films, both Indian and international.

Bollywood To Rule In Muscat Festival

Muscat: Muscat Festival is all set to open in the capital of Sultanate
of Oman from Jan 27-Feb 24.

It will host a series of events comprising of a fashion show, food festival, a cycle race, and an extreme sailing championship.

Big Bollywood luminaries Shah Rukh Khan, Lara Dutta and Sonu Nigam will be a part of this fest.

Salim Bin Adey Al-Mamari, Director General of Tourism Promotion, Sultanate of Oman, told media persons “While singer Sonu Nigam and actress Lara Dutta will perform at the fest Feb 10, superstar Shah Rukh Khan will have a stage-show there Feb 17.”

Oman Seeks To Woo Indian Tourists

BANGALORE: The oil-rich Sultanate of Oman has for the first time turned its focus on tapping Indian tourists, recognising the huge potential.

The Oman Ministry of Tourism organised a roadshow here today, focusing on increasing business opportunities and establishing contacts within the Indian travel trade industry.

Similar events are planned in Chennai (January 21), Mumbai (January 24) and Delhi (January 25). The five cities are going to be the focus markets in India for Oman in the next two years, officials said.

Currently, Europe and GCC ( Gulf Cooperation Council )) countries constitute a majority of tourist arrivals to Oman, which numbered 1.7 million in 2010.

At present, the traffic between India and Oman comprise visiting friends and relatives and those travelling for employment. The aim is to see that Indians become number one in tourist arrivals in six-seven years, said Oman's Director General of Tourism Promotion, Salim Bin Adey Al-Mamari.

The focus on India is part of Oman's strategy not to "put all eggs in one basket", in the sense it wants to look beyond Europe and GCC.

Officials are promoting Oman, which has a seven-lakh strong Indian community, as a "safe" country with similar food tastes and people known for their hospitality.

"We are positioning Oman as a niche destination with a right blend of well-preserved heritage and modern design, forts, castles, mosques and ancient buildings," he said.

Oman's leading carrier Oman Air , along with Aitken Spence Hotels , Grand Hyatt Muscat , Shangri-La's Bar Al Jissah Resort National Travel and Tourism, Travel Point and Zahara Tours are some of those participating in the road-shows.

Al-Mamari said Oman would soon come out with an India-specific package, which would include air fare and accommodation, to attract tourists.

Oman's tourism ministry intends to capitalise on existing historical ties and similarities with India in culture, music, culinary delights and family values.

"We are placing significant emphasis on strengthening our relationship with trade community while positioning Oman as a leisure and MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions) destination among Indian travellers," said Khalid Al Zadjali , Director of Tourism Events from Oman's Ministry of Tourism .

More than two million visitors are expected for the Muscat Festival to be held from January 27 to February 24.

As part of the celebrations, noted singer Sonu Nigam accompanied by Bollywood actor Lara Dutta would stage a performance on February 10, while Shah Rukh Khan, who has a huge fan following in Oman, is expected to perform on February 17.

High Voltage Performance By Sonu Niigaam

UDAIPUR: The National Youth Festival 2011 on its fourth day on Saturday began on a musical note and concluded with a high-voltage performance by Bollywood playback singer Sonu Niigaam.

Shilpgram, which is hosting food festival' and Yuvakriti', where youths from rural areas are exhibiting their creations, was the most crowded place. Yuvakriti has evoked entrepreneurial aspirations among the youths by giving them a chance to display their models.

It was a delight for music lovers with 20 musical events at 10 different places. The GKP Lok Kala Mandal auditorium witnessed vibrant Indian classical ragas. The auditorium at the MB College saw some sizzling solo instrumental presentations.

Prashant from Jaipur who performed on the tabla at Lok Kala Mandal, said, "I am thankful as the event has given me an opportunity to perform before audiences from across India and SAARC countries." Delegates from north Indian enjoyed classical south Indian and north eastern dance forms like Kuchipudi and bamboo dance at RA Auditorium.

The painting competition at Bagore Ki Haveli turned out to be huge. Over 200 paintings from various states were displayed. The corridors of this majestic 18th century Haveli inspired the youths to come up with new ideas on paper.

The biggest adventure show of the day was an act by the army jawans in a camp at the Railway Institute. They displayed bike stunts and climbed ladders on the running bikes. Fourteen jawans did acrobatics on moving bikes.

The cultural extravaganza continued until late in the evening outside the food court at MB College stadium. Many states exchanged gifts. The Pakistan delegation gifted t-shirts to Indians, who in return gave them mementos.

The extravaganza will conclude on Sunday at the railway ground with a magnificent closing ceremony. The first salutation would come from the sky with para droppers of the Indian Air Force. According to Wing Commander Jai Krishna, skydiving will see nine divers jumping from the sky holding the tricolour after being dropped by an IAF aircraft.

This would be followed by a bike stunt by army jawans encapsulating several formations ranging from performance by one man on the bike to over eight men on a bike.

Sonu Niigaam: Music Runs In My Blood (Interveiw)

Sonu Niigaam, one of the best singers in the Indian music industry, is not very happy with the industry, which, he feels, does not have many opportunities for the sea of talent that exists in India.

During his recent concert in Delhi on New Year's Eve, Sonu told TOI about his life in the industry and beyond, his aspirations and his dreams for a music industry that is independent of Bollywood.

How does it feel to come back to the city – New Delhi – the place you grew up in? There are no words to express that feeling. I was born in Faridabad and I spent a major part of my growing up years in Delhi before shifting to Mumbai. Delhi-NCR is still very special to me. That is why I never think twice when I get a chance to perform here.

You have completed almost two decades in the Indian film industry. Does it make you feel like a veteran?
Well, there are singers who are older than me. But if you talk of experience, yes, I do feel like a veteran. Having said that, I would like to add that I feel I am the youngest veteran.

From singing Rafi songs, hosting shows to becoming the most sought-after singer in B-wood. How has the journey been? It has been a rollercoaster ride. When I started, I faced a lot of hardships. People used to call me a Rafi clone because I used to sing my favourite singer's songs. Then "Sa Re Ga Ma Pa" happened. It gave me a good break. Surviving in the industry without a godfather was difficult for sure. But over time, things started to get better and good opportunities were soon coming my way. The rest, as they say, is history. I was lucky, I must say, but everyone is not..

Why do you say that? Arre, look at the sea of talent that is here in India. But does everyone make it big? No. There are many singers who have got an exceptional talent, but spend their lives singing in local trains or hotels. Does the country even know who they are? Music in India is restricted only to Bollywood. Whoever manages to make a mark there is remembered. The ones who fail to reach and make it big there are forgotten.
But there are bigwigs who do not belong to the industry but have managed to make their mark in India. Classical singers, instrumentalists...
Yes. They've carved out a niche for themselves. But they started their careers when there were plenty of opportunities in India. At that time, classical music, bhajans, children's songs and patriotic numbers were prominent in Hindi films as well. Do the films of today have any of these? There is a serious dearth of opportunities these days in the industry.

Is this the reason why the musical talent hunt contestants get a lot of hype when they are in the show and then fade away into oblivion after the show is over? Yes. Now you are getting there. The simple reason is: There is a lot of talent, but there are no opportunities. Singers from all over the country assemble on the platform of music-based reality shows to reach Bollywood. It started with "Meri Aawaz Suno" and "Sa Re Ga Ma Pa". But except Sunidhi Chauhan, Shreya Ghoshal and Kunal Ganjawala, no one made it really big. It is not that there was a lack of talent. In fact, there were singers who were much better than even the winners. Even now, very few talent hunt contestants actually manage to reach that level. And even after reaching there, unfortunately, they need to continue holding on to the crutch of Bollywood to make their presence felt. This is a slap on the face of music in our country.

So what is the solution? This situation won't improve until and unless we get a music industry, which is independent of B-wood. An industry where singers get tremendous opportunity to prove their mettle. An industry where no talent is wasted...

You have tried your hands at classical, Indi-pop. You can dance and play so many instruments. What is the secret behind this versatility? I'd say music runs in my blood. My parents are exceptionally talented singers, so even before I was born, it was a known fact to them that I'd become a singer. Thanks to my genes, I started off at the age of three and since then, music has meant everything to me. That is the reason why I try to make myself as versatile as possible.

Has this musical gene come in your son as well? Oh yes! Although Nevaan is only three-and-a-half now, he has already sung with Lataji. He is a brilliant singer.

Sonu Niigaam Live In Muscat !!

MUSCAT - Organisers of the sultanate’s biggest cultural and entertainment extravaganza — the Muscat Festival — said on Monday they expected the 29-day annual event to attract more than two million visitors this year.

Although there will be only two main venues, compared to four and more in the past, new additions such as a food festival, a fashion show and The Extreme Sailing series, as well as the return of the Tour of Oman Cycle Race, are set to be major crowd-pullers, key officials of Muscat Municipality said.

Other highlights will include live concerts by Bollywood megastar Shah Rukh Khan and an Indian evening featuring singer Sonu Nigam and actress Lara Datta.
The venues for all events of the festival, from January 27, will be the Qurum Natural Park and the Naseem Garden. The programmes will begin at 4pm every day at both places, ending at 11pm, with the entry fee fixed as 200 baisa for adults and 100 baisa for children.

Muscat Municipality Chairman Sultan bin Hamdoon Al Harthi stressed the festival was being promoted as a celebration of Oman’s culture and heritage, but promised there would be plenty of fun and excitement for the entire family.

“This festival is an important celebration of our heritage as well as a showcase of our ability to host major international events of world-class standards,” Harthi told a news conference.

“We expect over two million visitors this year,” he said, adding that the activities had been “specifically chosen to exhilarate every sector of our society with events, exhibitions and lectures ranging across a number of fields including sport, culture, food, music, fashion, heritage and literature.”

The Tour of Oman bike race will take place between February 15 and 20, with 128 of the world’s greatest cyclists racing through Muscat, Sur, up the Jebel Al Akhdhar and through the Batinah and Sharqiyah regions. Racing will start at 2pm on all six days.

“After the success of the inaugural competition last year, places for this year have been highly contested and the successful sixteen teams make up some of the world’s greatest cyclists,” Harthi said. There will be two Omani teams taking part.

The legendary cyclist Eddy Merckx, who is the organiser of Tour of Oman and also five times winner of Tour de France, will also host bike rides with children before two of the Tour stages.

The Shah Rukh Khan show is set for February 17 and the Indian Night’ with Nigam and Datta for February 10.

Kuwaiti play

A Kuwaiti play in Arabic, called Bakhet and Bakhetah, to be staged on February 23 and 24, will be among other major attractions.

The water off Muscat will be playing host to the first leg of the 2011 Extreme Sailing Series from February 22 to 24.

Over ten top professional teams representing eight nations will tackle a unique mix of open water races and high-octane ‘stadium’ showdowns.

The ‘Oman Food Festival’, from February 5 to 15, will focus on Omani and international cuisine, while the Muscat Fashion Week, from February 22 and the final event of the festival, will feature designs from top fashion houses, “putting Muscat at the cutting edge of what’s hot in the world of Arabic styled fashion,” Harthi said. He added both events would now be a part of Muscat Festival every year.

The Oman Heritage and Culture Village at the Qurum Park, a star attraction every year, will provide visitors an opportunity to learn some of the key techniques used in traditional crafts including how to weave baskets of date palm leaves, used in most Omani villages both to store and collect dates.

Meanwhile, an ‘International Festival for Arts, Heritage and Creativity’, also at Qurum, will be a meeting ground for craftspeople from more than 25 countries around the world. The exhibition will include artisans at work, a bazaar and a show of albums, catalogues and books on arts and handicrafts.

Major events taking place at the Naseem Garden will include fun fairs, electronic games, a consumer exhibition with nearly 500 companies from 30 countries taking part, children’s entertainment shows and an ‘Education Village’.

There will be daily laser shows at Qurum at 8.30pm and firework displays at Naseem.

The Royal Oman Police (ROP), in the meantime, said the newly-opened Muscat Expressway was expected to significantly reduce traffic bottlenecks during the festival. It pointed out that motorists, especially those coming from the Batinah region, could now use the new road to reach Naseem and Qurum and avoid the highly congested Sultan Qaboos Street.

National Youth Fest set for a big start

JAIPUR: The City of Lakes is all set to be decked in vibrant hues as the much-awaited National Youth Festival 2011 will begin on Wednesday.

The festival is organised jointly by the ministry of youth affairs and sports, and the department of youth affairs and sports, Rajasthan.

The five-day extravaganza will be held at various locations across Udaipur. Over 5,000 participants from various parts of the country are expected to showcase their culture through folk dances, culinary skills besides taking part in competitions like painting, drawing, slogan-writing etc.

More than 200 students from Asean and Saarc countries are expected to participate in this festival, which is going international for the first time. This year's theme is Sabse Pehle Bharat'.

Several dignitaries and politicians, including Vice-President Hamid Ansari, Rajasthan governor Shivraj Patil, chief minister Ashok Gehlot, Union minister for youth affairs and sports MS Gill, and minister of state for youth affairs Mani Lal Garasai are likely to attend the event.

The opening ceremony will be presided by Vice-President Hamid Ansari at the MB Stadium in Udaipur from 3pm followed by a cultural programme on the theme Ethnicity in India'.

The major highlight of the festival is electrifying performances by various hip-hop, jazz and pop bands under the Western Music and Rock Band Nite' to be held at MB Stadium on January 14. Popular bands such as Parikrama and Soulmate will perform besides folk singers and dancers.

On January 15, it is playback singer Sonu Niigaam's turn to enthrall the youngsters at MB Stadium. The closing ceremony also promises to be equally riveting with a colourful performance by the bands from Indian Armed Forces.

NYF is organised in collaboration with the Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan (NYKS) and National Service Scheme (NSS).

The district authorities have introduced special buses to ferry participants from locations at a reasonable price. The events will take place at Rajasthan Agriculture University, Meera Kanya Mahavidhlaya, Railway Training Centre, Mohanlal Sukhadia University and Shilpgram.

Sonu Niigaam Welomes 2011 In Style !!

GURGAON: Aaj ki raat main Gurgaon ko khoob nachaunga, singing sensation Sonu Nigam told TOI just before his live concert at Kingdom of Dreams in Gurgaon on Friday night. And he did not have to try much to keep his words. Even before he could come on stage to perform, Gurgaon had gone berserk.

The singer, who has carved a niche for himself in Bollywood and Indipop singing, presented Gurgaon with two-and-a-half hours of power-packed performance as the clock ticked away the last few minutes of 2010. His audience, which seemed to comprise almost the whole of Gurgaon, complemented his energy, as the hub reverberated with Bollywood chartbusters, whistles and cheering.

It is the best performance I have ever seen in my life. Sonu is really the best singer Bollywood has ever had. This New Years Eve is going to remain special to me always, said Gauri Jain, a Golf Course Road resident.

It was not just adults who were mesmerized by Sonus golden voice and his scintillating performance. Children, too, seemed to have lost sleep, and gladly so, as they urged Sonu uncle to sing their favourite hits.
